Free Stuff & Senior Discounts at Retail Stores

Turning 55 unlocks real money at the register — but almost nobody hands it to you. You have to ask. Here is what stores, pharmacies, restaurants and theaters actually give people 55 and older, what age you need to be, and which day you have to shop.

Read This First — It Doubles What You Get

  1. Ask every single time. Most senior discounts are never posted and never applied automatically. The cashier will not offer it. You have to say the words "do you have a senior discount?" before they ring you up.
  2. Ask before payment, not after. Once the transaction is closed, most registers cannot re-apply it without a manager.
  3. Carry your ID. Some stores ask. Nearly all of them are allowed to.
  4. Check the day. A large share of these are one day a week or one day a month. Shopping on Tuesday instead of Monday can be the whole discount.
  5. Franchises differ. The same chain can offer it at one location and not the next. A "no" at one store is not a "no" everywhere.

Actually Free — No Purchase Discount, Just Free

Most "senior deals" are really percentage discounts. These are the ones where you walk out having paid nothing for the item or service.

Free

Free tax preparation

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide prepares and files your federal return at no cost, with a focus on filers 50 and older. The IRS runs the same thing through its Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. You do not need to be an AARP member.

  • Focused on 50+
  • Roughly February through April
  • Libraries, senior centers, community centers
Free

Free drink or coffee with a meal

Whataburger gives guests 55 and older a free 16 oz soft drink or 12 oz coffee with an entree at participating locations. A number of McDonald's franchises do a free or near-free senior coffee, though this one is set store by store.

  • 55+
  • Participating locations only — ask first
Free

Free rewards memberships that pay in free food

Chili's, Panera, Red Lobster and Tim Hortons all let you join their rewards programs for free, and they hand out free items as you go. These are open to every age, but they stack on top of a senior discount at the same visit.

  • Any age
  • Stacks with senior pricing
Free

Free eye and hearing screenings

Most national optical and hearing-aid chains run free basic screenings to get you in the door. A screening is not a full medical exam, and a full eye exam is usually still billed — but the screening itself costs nothing.

  • Any age, marketed to 55+
  • Screening only, not a diagnosis
Free

Free or reduced public transit

Nearly every city transit system in the country cuts fares for older riders, and a good number make it completely free. The age is usually 65, sometimes 60. You apply once at the transit office and get a card.

  • Usually 65+, some 60+
  • Your local transit authority
Free

Free museum and park days

Many museums run free admission days, and the National Park Service sets several fee-free days each year that anyone can use. Separately, the lifetime America the Beautiful Senior Pass covers park entry for 62 and older for a one-time fee rather than free.

  • Free days: any age. Senior Pass: 62+
  • Set dates — check before you drive out

Regional grocery chains generally

Senior grocery discount days are extremely common at regional chains and almost never advertised nationally. Kroger, Publix, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer and others have run them at the store or division level. This is the highest-value question you can ask at customer service, because groceries are a weekly expense rather than an occasional one — 5% off every week beats 20% off once.

  • Usually 55+ or 60+
  • Usually one day a week or month
  • Ask at the customer service desk, not the register
